Magnesium is an essential mineral and the second most common electrolyte in the human body. In the body, more than 60% of magnesium is present in the skeleton, 27% in muscles, 6% to 7% in other cells and less than 1% in external cells. Magnesium is used in the body mainly as an electrolyte and as a cofactor for enzymes. As an electrolyte, it serves to maintain water balance. As a cofactor, it participates in more than 300 enzymatic systems that control muscle, nervous, bone, protein, DNA, glucose and energy metabolism.

Magnesium is important for maintaining the electrical stability of cells, cell membranes, muscle contraction, nerve conduction, and regulation of vascular tone. Magnesium deficiencies are common in developed countries. Causes can range from the nutritional quality of foods to weight loss diets, exercise, excessive coffee consumption, excessive salt (sodium) consumption, heavy menstrual periods, excessive sweating and prolonged stress, chronic alcoholism, changes in the digestive tract. gastrointestinal, diabetes, use of some medications, prolonged diarrhea (common), which increases excretion, high levels of aldosterone, vasopressin or thyroid hormones, among others.

The consequences of magnesium deficiency can be various, for example, the reduction of magnesium concentration in smooth muscle and cardiac cells can cause changes in vascular function, inducing cardiac arrhythmias, muscle cramps and hypertension. Low serum magnesium concentrations are also associated with reduced glucose tolerance and neuronal excitation.

The main symptoms of this deficiency are: loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, drowsiness, fatigue, weakness, irritability, muscle spasms, tremors and loss of appetite. In more severe cases, it can cause apathy, confusion, memory loss, numbness and tingling, seizures, personality changes, and altered heart rate. In extreme cases, hypocalcemia or hypokalemia, prolonged muscle contraction, delirium, and hallucinations may occur. Vitamin B6 is a B complex vitamin that increases the bioavailability of magnesium and improves its action on the energy-producing metabolism, nervous system and immune system.
